Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare four nightguard vital bleaching (NGVB) products of comparable strengths and varying compositions, and contrast their effectiveness and safety following three nights' use.
Method: Zoom!(TM) Professional Take Home Whitening System (6% hydrogen peroxide), Opalescence® F Mint 15% (Carbamide Peroxide), Rembrandt® Xtra Comfort (16% Carbamide Peroxide), and Nupro® White Gold (15% Carbamide Peroxide) were each dispensed to twenty-five subjects for three consecutive nights of use (n=100). Vita and Trubyte Bioform Shade Guides were used to document maxillary anterior shades of all subjects at four visits: Enrollment, Baseline, Day 4 and Day 11. Tooth sensitivity surveys were completed at each visit, and tooth whitening satisfaction surveys were completed at Day 4 and Day 11.
Results: Zoom!(TM) Professional Take Home Whitening System demonstrated significantly greater changes in shade compared to the other products at Days 4 and 11 as measured by the Vita Shade Guide. Use of all products resulted in increased tooth sensitivity at Day 4, which diminished to baseline levels by Day 11. The majority of patients across all four groups were satisfied with their tooth whitening results, with no significant differences among the four products.
Conclusion: The results of this study demonstrate that the use of all four take home tooth whitening materials produced whitening effects, with Zoom!(TM) Professional Take Home Whitening System producing the most tooth whitening over three nights.
