Objective: - To evaluate the effectiveness of Sonicare toothbrush in maintaining color of bleached teeth and compare it to a manual toothbrush in vivo.
Methods: - 42 subjects were enrolled according to the study inclusionary criteria. A baseline tooth color assessment was measured using the Vita shade guide for the upper front teeth, oral examination and an upper impression was taken (visit1). All subjects were assigned to a standard home bleaching system utilizing 15% Carbamide Peroxide (Opalescence, Ultradent Products, Inc) to bleach the upper teeth for two weeks according to the manufacturer's instructions (visit2). Subjects then were divided randomly to two equal groups via stratified randomization based on Vita shade scores (visit3). The first group (control) subjects were given the A.D.A standard manual soft toothbrush .The second group; subjects were given Sonicare electric toothbrush (Philips Oral Healthcare, USA). All subjects were instructed to use their toothbrush twice daily for 2 and half minutes. Safety, adverse events and tooth color assessments were conducted at baseline, and at 1,2,3 and 6 months after treatment.
Result: ANOVA was used to analyze the data among each group for the Baseline and recall visits. There was statistical significant difference for manual toothbrush between baseline and 1,2,3 and 6month(p<0.05)), however there was no statistical significant difference between baseline and 1,2,3 and 6month recall using the Sonicare toothbrush (p>0.05).
Conclusion: - This in-vivo study indicates that Sonicare toothbrush was able to maintain the bleaching effects of home bleaching system over 6months period. Supported by Philips Oral Healthcare, USA.
