Abstract 2069

This study was performed to evaluate and compare the influence of carisolv gel on resin adhe¬sion to sound dentine using two different adhesive systems. Thirty caries-free human molars were collected and prepared for shear bond strength testing, and divided into two main groups according to adhesive used: Group I where single bond adhesive was used and group II where prompt L-pop adhesive was used. The two groups were subdivided each into three subgroups, each of five according to treatment the dentine surfaces received. In subgroups Ia and IIa only the adhesive was applied without carisolv treatment. In subgroups Ib and IIb carisolv gel was applied for five minutes followed by etching and adhesive application, in subgroup Ib and direct application of adhesive in subgroup IIb. In subgroups Ic and IIc carisolv was applied for 15 minutes followed by etching and adhesive ap¬plication for subgroup Ic, and in subgroup IIc adhesive was directly applied. Resin was applied, specimens stored for 24 hours, then mounted in a Universal testing machine with cross-head speed of 5 mm/min to determine the shear bond strength in Mpa. Mode of fracture was examined for each specimen. Selected specimens were sectioned, prepared to detect the dentine resin interface, gold sputtered and examined with a scanning electron microscope. Dentine discs were prepared for scanning electron microscope examination to detect the effect of different dentine treatments used in this study. It was concluded that: 1- Dentine treatment with carisolv gel for five minutes prior to acid etching did not have a significant effect on shear bond strength in any of the groups. 2- Dentine treatment with carisolv gel for 15 minutes prior to acid etching significantly lowered shear bond strength in both groups. 3- Mean shear bond strength values for group II were significantly lower than those for group I.
